An encounter has broken out between militants and Government forces in the Sirhama area of Bijbehara belt in South Kashmir’s Islamabad (anantnag) district on Wednesday morning.

An official confirming the exchange of gunfire to The Kashmiriyat said that 03 RR Rashtriya Rifles of Indian Army, Jammu Kashmir Police and CRPF jointly laid a siege in the Sirhama area of Anantnag.

He said that the cordon was laid after the forces had received a tip-off about Militant movements in the area.

As soon as the forces launched the searches, the Militants opened fire on them to which the forces responded.

All the entry and exit points to the area have been sealed, sources said, adding “two to three militants are believed to be holed up at the site of the encounter.”

Meanwhile, the Jammu Kashmir Police has said that they are trying their best to persuade the hiding militants to surrender.

The locals meanwhile said that an intermittent exchange of gunfire is going on.
