Delhi Court Grants Bail to 7 Murder Accused in Delhi Communal Violence Case, says Can’t Jail Them Until the Trial is Concluded

On Wednesday, a Delhi court granted bail to 7 accused in a murder case related to the Northeast Delhi violence in February 2020. The court has said that the accused cannot be incarcerated until the trial is concluded. And the trial will be delayed most likely, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

12 people were accused in the alleged murder case of Vinod Kumar, in the communal violence that took place on February 24, last year.

Amitabh Rawat, the Additional sessions judge has granted relief to 7 accused. He says that the accused can only be incarcerated when the trial is concluded, which will be elongated due to the pandemic.

He noted that most of them remained in judicial custody for more than an year. He said that after considering facts and circumstances, the period of custody, the applications of all the accused are allowed and they are admitted to bail.

Communal violence broke out between the anti-CAA protestors and the supporters of the controversial bill in north-east Delhi, last year. Over 53 people were killed and more than 700 were left injured.

Sagir Ahmad, Naved Khan, Javed Khan, Arshad, Gulzar, Mohd Imran, and Chand Babu have been directed by the court, to furnish personal bonds of Rs 20,000 each with one local surety of the like amount as condition for their bail.

The court has also directed them to not indulge in any kind of criminal activity. They’ve been asked not to leave Delhi-NCR without court’s permission and have also been advised not to tamper with the evidence.

The accused were booked under the FIR registered in the case for various offenses, like murder, attempt to murder, rioting, promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion under the
Indian Penal Code and Arms Act.
