About 200 Israeli Settlers Barge into Batn al-Hawa Neighborhood and Attack Residents

Earlier this week, on Tuesday evening, about 200 Israeli settlers stormed into Batn al-Hawa neighborhood in Silwan, Occupied Jerusalem. These Jewish settlers started attacking its residents.

These settlers entered the neighborhood under the protection of occupation forces. This crowd included gunmen, as well. They barged into the Batn al-Hawa neighborhood and started provoking and attacking the residents of the area.

Last year, in November 2020, the Israeli High Court in Jerusalem ordered the eviction of 7 Palestinian families, i.e., 87 Palestinians in the Batn al-Hawa neighborhood to be replaced by the Israeli settlers.

The residents of Batn al-Hawa had filed appeals in the Israeli court but the court rejected them. Instead, it allowed “Ateret Cohanim” to continue its procedures to expel the seven Palestinian families.

“Ateret Cohanim” is a settler organization, that seeks ti forcibly evict 100 Palestinian families from Batn al-Hawa neighborhood of Silwan. The organization is supported by the Israeli occupation authorities and it claims to be the rightful owner of the land in Batn al-Hawa. It claims that a Jewish trust active in the area more than a 100 years ago owned the land.

Silwan is the home to around 33,000 Palestinians.

It is located outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem and its holy sites. And Israel has been moving its citizens into the neighborhood since the 1980s, which eventually resulted in numerous human rights violations, including the forced eviction and displacement of Palestinian residents.
