21 percent J&K women between 18-49 years age experience physical, sexual Assault by spouses: Government

In Jammu and Kashmir at least 21 percent of married women of 18-49 years have experienced injuries from their spouse during the physical or sexual violence against them reveals a survey conducted by Government of India (GoI).

The official figures of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare accessed by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) states, “Twenty one percent of married women of 18-49 years of age who have experienced physical or sexual violence reported suffering from injuries from what their husband did to them.”

“Among women who have experienced both physical and sexual violence this proportion raises to 38 percent,” it reads.

The report further states that the most common types of injuries among women who have experienced physical and sexual violence are cuts, bruises, or aches with 23 percent, eye injuries, sprains, dislocations, or minor burns was of 19 percent, the injuries of deep wounds, broken bones, broken teeth, or any other serious injury was of 18 percent and 17 percent of injuries was of severe burns.

Stating the status of the women who sought help during sexual and physical violence, the GoI in the report has mentioned that only 14 percent of women aged 18-49 years old have sought help.

“Two percent never sought help but told someone and more than four-fifths of nearly 84 percent never sought help and never told anyone,” it reads.

The report also reads that among the women who sought help, the main sources of help were their own family of nearly 54 percent, husband’s family with 44 percent or a friend with 24 percent and four percent sought help from the police—(KNO)
