
The Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani has passed away late on Wednesday evening.
Sources told The Kashmiriyat that the senior Hurriyat leader passed away at his residence in the Hyderpora area of Srinagar.
The family members of Geelani as per news reports too have confirmed the demise of the Hurriyat leader.
Born in 1929, Geelani was previously a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir but later on founded Tehreek-e-Hurriyat.
He has served as the chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference, a conglomerate of pro-separatist parties in Jammu and Kashmir.
He quit the Hurriyat in June 2020.
Meanwhile, the former chief minister of Jammu Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti tweeted, “Saddened by the news of Geelani Sahab’s passing away. We may not have agreed on most things but I respect him for his steadfastness & standing by his beliefs. May Allah Ta’aala grant him Jannat & condolences to his family & well-wishers.”
