Fearing Job Losses, Jammu Observes Complete Shutdown to Protest Against Opening of Reliance Stores

To protest against the move to open reliance stores in the Jammu district, people in Jammu have confined themselves to their house, as dozens of protests were taken out in the Jammu city.

The Call for shutdown was called by 22 Organizations based in Jammu, headed by the Chamber of Commerce and Industries (JCCI) to protest against the government’s ‘anti-traders’ policy in Jammu.

Adjoining areas including Samba are observing a shutdown. Shops and other business establishments are shut in the areas, while vehicular movement is thin on the streets.

A trader from Samba said that opening of reliance stores would kill all small businesses in Jammu.

“This has happened everywhere. They are trying to snatch the bread and butter of our families,” he said.

In Jammu city, all the main markets including Raghunath Bazaar, Narwal Mandi, Bahu Plaza,  JDA Complex, Gole Market are completely shut in protest.

Speaking to The Kashmiriyat, a shopkeeper said that the move to launch reliance stores is discriminative. “People will lose jobs. Small traders will have to shut their shops, that is something everyone in Jammu has to understand,” Tarun, a shopper said.

The Bar Association is also observing a pen-down strike to protest the “discriminative move.”
