The Judicial remand of three Kashmiri students–booked on the charges of sedition– has been extended till 07 December by Agra court on Wednesday.

All three – Arsheed Yusuf, Inayat Altaf, and Showket, students of Raja Balwant Singh Engineering College in Agra were booked on charges of sedition after they allegedly celebrated the Pakistan team’s cricket match win.

The Agra court in Uttar Pradesh has extended the judicial remand of three Kashmiri students, who were booked and arrested on the charges of sedition, till 7th December.

Sources told The Kashmiriyat that the next date of hearing of students petition, seeking transfer of the case from Agra to Mathura has been fixed as 10th December.

Mushtaq Habib, President J&K Students Association told The Kashmiriyat that, “Sedition & FIR will ruin the career of these students. Sedition, FIR is very harsh punishment and will have serious repercussions, psycho-somatic consequences on the students.”

“Our lawyer Advocate Madhuvan Chaturvedi is defending the case of all three students through our association with the help of APCR (Association of Protection for Civil Rights),” he said.

The Uttar Pradesh police booked and arrested the trio under section 153A, 505 (1)B of IPC, section 66F of IT Act, and section 124 (A) (Sedition) for allegedly celebrating the Pakistan cricket team’s win.

Spokesperson of Jammu Kashmir Students Association, Nasir Khuehami told The Kashmiriyat that “Since there are security issues and students were heckled and roughed up inside premises of court by right-wing activists and some lawyers. Our lawyer has filed a petition in Allahabad High Court seeking transfer of the case from Agra to Mathura.”

Earlier, the family of a Kashmiri student from Bandipora district had staged a protest in Srinagar and demanded immediate release of their son.

Kashmiri Leaders sharply reacted to the UP government framing sedition charges against the Kashmiri students who celebrated Pakistan’s win in the recent T-20 cricket against India and described it as “victimization of these poor kids”.

Omar Abdullah, the former Chief Minister of Jammu Kashmir and the National Conference vice-president tweeted that the college authorities have given these students a clean chit and confirmed they didn’t shout any slogans. Rather than taking the college assurance at face value, the UP police is victimizing these poor kids.

PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti said that the “crackdown” on Kashmiri students both within J&K and outside as “reprehensible”. The situation in J&K after two years of “suppression” should’ve been an eye-opener for the Government of India and led to course correction. “BJP’s pseudo patriotism disregards the idea of India”, she tweeted and sought immediate release of these students.
