Two photographs of youth posing with assault rifles have gone viral over Social media in Kashmir as the numbers of youth who have picked up guns challenging the Indian rule on Kashmir has mounted to 144, making 2018- the year of highest Militant recruitment since 2008.
One of the youth in the photographs was identified as Amir Ahmed Bhat and Umar Ahmed Dhobi, both residents of Shopian.
Amir Ahmed Bhat, the 21 year old young boy from Shopian’s Chitragam, as per family members was arrested in January this year and was kept under detention for more than a month. “He was tortured inhumanely in the Police custody,” a family member told The Kashmiriyat.
The fear of Police prosecution and the follow up has led many youth in the past to pick up Arms including some popular commanders like Dawood Sheikh and Majid Zarger of Quimoh Kulgam. “Amir had seen his friends and relatives going to jail, some of them are still in jail, booked under baseless offences, he did not want to land up in the jail for months together,” the family member said.
“To avoid being arrested by the local Police, i remember there has not been a single day when he slept at home,” he said, adding that, “Amir used to sleep in the apple orchards since January 2018.

” Some of Amir’s friends and relatives have been arrested the last month and he grew in suspicion that he might be taken away too.
“i took dinner for him to the nearby orchard on Friday since he had not been home on that day, but i found him missing,” the family member told The Kashmiriyat. The family waited for Amir to come back, but on Monday, only his photo with a gun appeared over the social networking sites.
“He was innocent, but he was pushed to pick up the gun, he did not want to tortured in the Police custody,” a friend of Umar told The Kashmiriyat.
Amir’s father passed away last year due to cancer, now he is survived by a mother, six sisters and two brothers.
However Police Sources said that Amir had been working as an Over ground worker for Zeenat ul Islam since the past few years.
“He was closely linked to Zeenat ul Islam who is one of the most wanted Militants,” Police sources told The Kashmiriyat.
He said that another youth who posed with a gun, Umar Dhobi was also linked to a slain Lashkar commander from malikgund Shopian who was killed in an encounter recently in Kiloora area of Shopian.
“However after the killing of the Lashkar commander, he got close with Hizb and joined them,” the Police official said.
Umar Mohuddin Dhobi, a resident of Pinjoora area in South Kashmir’s Shopian district owned a confectionery shop in his locality.
“He was a B.A student, but after situation the mayhem and constant bloodshed in South Kashmir, he quit his studies and opened a shop,” a friend of Umar told The Kashmiriyat. Many Kashmiri youth quit studies and some were even thrown out of jobs for their alleged role in Anti India activities since 2008.
“He went missing from home on Friday morning and since then we have been looking for him everywhere, but to no avail,” a relative told The Kashmiriyat. Today in what has become a trend now for new age Militants to announce their entry into Militant outfits, a photograph of Umar Dhobi carrying an Ak 47 Went viral over social networking.
Umar belongs to a poor family and is survived by old age parents, two Brothers and two sisters.
Since 2010, Kashmiri youth have been picking up guns after the civilian uprising of that year failed, Many prominent faces of New age Militancy including Burhan Wani, Majid Zarger, Saddam padder, Junaid Matoo all picked up guns post 2010.
