The Delimitation Panel on Monday has proposed six additional seats for the Jammu region and 1 for Kashmir Valley in its first paper- a draft proposal for allocation of constituencies.

This addition will take the total number of assembly seats in Jammu to 43 and Kashmir Valley to 47.
The Panel has proposed 9 reserved seats for Scheduled tribes and seven for Scheduled Castes.
The Associate members have been asked to submit their suggestions by Dec 31
The delimitation panel has also sought reservations for Kashmiri Pandits who have been demanding a floating constituency seat on the Sikkim pattern
The commission headed by a former supreme court judge, Justice (retired) Ranjana Desai is responsible for reserving a designated number of seats in a state assembly or the Lok Sabha for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities.
The creation of the Delimitation Commission has evoked mixed response from the political parties of Jammu Kashmir.

Members of Parliament of the Jammu Kashmir National Conference (NC) confirmed that they will attend the next meeting of the Delimitation Commission.
The Jammu Kashmir PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has rejected the commission saying that she had no faith in the delimitation commission which was “working on the BJP’s agenda”.
