Prominent Activist Shakeel Bakshi Booked Under Public Safety Act

Eminent Pro Freedom leader and the founder of Islamic Students League, Shakeel Ahmed Bakshi who was under Police detention in Srinagar has been booked under Public Safety Act.

The Kashmiriyat earlier reported that Police raided the house of Bakshi on 11 September in Bemina and arrested him post which he was lodged at police station in Batamaloo.

Shakeel Bakshi was first arrested in 1975 when he participated in a General Strike for ‘political rights’ in Kashmir.

“He was lodged in Bemina Police Post from where he was shifted to Parimpora on Tuesday and subsequently he was sent to Jammu jail after being booked under Public Safety Act,” one of the close aides of Shakeel Bakshi told The Kashmiriyat.

Bakshi was booked under Public Safety Act in 2010 for bringing the Kashmir issue into limelight through Social Media and is also one of the pioneers of the bringing the Kashmir issue into limelight via Social Media.

Shakeel Bakshi was also rounded up by forces in 2008 during a protest rally which resulted into him being critical inside the hospital for many weeks.

He is also believed to be one of the pioneers of the Armed Struggle in Kashmir that started in 1988 and his Islamic Students league was also a front campaigner for Muslim United front in 1987 assembly polls.

Bakshi who has spent more than 11 years in various jails was also arrested the last year after Zakir Musa issued a statement against Hurriyat leaders.

He was kept under detention for more than a month of questioning.

His younger brother, Shariq Ahmad, was shot in the leg by Indian forces in 1990, later in 1998 he was killed.

A Police official denied that Shakeel Baskshi was ever lodged in Bemina Police Station, the DC of Srinagar was not available for comments on the arrest of Shakeel Bakshi. (The Kashmiriyat)
