An unknown dead body was found in the Sanatbugh area of Pulwama in 1998 when some locals passed by and found the dead body was of a famous commander from the nearby Bellow village. Muneer Ahmed Wani was a wanted Militant Commander who had crossed into the other side of Kashmir to get arms training in 1989.
Muneer remained active for more than seven years after crossing over into indian side of Kashmir in 1991. He was famous for being a master of disguises and managed to make many successful operations against the Government Forces from 1991 to 1998. In 1998, he was arrested in Srinagar as per Locals of Bellow area in Pulwama and two days later his bullet riddled body was found in a nearby village.
Twenty years later, his 22 years old son, Liyakat Wani following the footsteps of his father was killed along with his associate Wajid-ul-Islam in a gunfight at Takin village of Pulwama district on Saturday morning.
Liyakat as per his friends had completed his graduation in 2016 with 93 per cent marks and was a brilliant student of history. “he was a bright student and favourite of most of the teachers in the school,” Suhail, a friend of Liyakat told The Kashmiriyat.
Liyakat who had initially appeared in a photograph with Bashir Lashkar in 2017 is believed to be his close associate of , he had also appeared in photographs with slain commander, Sameer Tiger. Liyakat who tried to persuade his family many a times finally joined Militancy in the January of 2017.
Liyakat was one year old when his mother died of a cardiac arrest due to the nocturnal raids at her house by the Government Forces looking for Liayakat’s father, Muneer Ahmed Wani, who was a popular Militant, in 1998 his father too was killed by Forces.
Muneer Ahmed Wani, the father of Liyakat was a member of Militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen survived for 8 long years as a militant and was popularly known as as Colonel Jamil. “He was the Divisional Commander of the Militant outfit in 1990’s,” a relative of Liyakat told The Kashmiriyat.
Yesterday morning, the dead body of Slain Liyakat reached his native in Bellow area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district as thousands of women and men from many areas of South Kashmir had gathered to bid farewell to the slain Militant.
Six rounds of funeral prayers were offered for Liyakat by tens of thousands of people at his native village before he was laid to rest amid pro independence and Anti India slogans.
The only member of their family who survives now is the post graduate brother of the slain Liyakat Ahmed Wani.
