Water filtration plant in Shopian abandoned by officials for ‘unknown’ reasons

A filtration plant constructed by the Public Health Engineering department in the Chanchmarg Shadab Karewa area of Shopian has been abandoned due to unknown reasons forcing people to drink contaminated water.

The residents told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that in order to provide drinking water to the local population, work on the filtration plant was started and once it reached near completion, the authorities abandoned the project.

They said that since then the plant has become a dumping site for garbage with heaps of plastic waste.

Irshad Ahmad, a local questioned abandoning the project saying taxpayers’ money was wasted.

Locals said that in absence of a filtration plant, they are getting contaminated water due to which water broke diseases can break out anytime.

They demanded the intervention of DC Shopian in this regard so that the filtration plant would be made functional and people can get potable water—(KNO)
