Another earthquake jolts Jammu Kashmir

An earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale jolted Jammu Kashmir at 11:12 pm on Sunday.

The earthquake struck at 11:12 PM at a depth of 10 km from the surface. Its coordinates are latitude 33.54 degrees and longitude 76.24 degrees, the officials said.

However, there were no immediate reports of any loss of life or damage to property due to the earthquake.

This is the second earthquake to have hit the region in last four days. On January 05, An earthquake hit Jammu Kashmir earlier with its epicenter in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan.

After back to back quakes last year with minor depth, Some local earth scientists had cautioned that these small tremors could be the precursor of a major seismic event in the offing.

Others have said that these were beneficial because through these small occurrences the built-up pressure inside the earth is released that can avoid a major seismic event.

Ghulam Nabi Bhat, a professor of Geology in Jammu Kashmir spoke to The Kashmiriyat and said, “This region has been tectonically active since long time and in the recent past. There is likelihood of more such jolts in the region and a bigger one is likely to happen anytime in near future.”
