Renowned Kashmiri poet, Professor Rehman Rahi passed away on Monday morning at his Vicharnag residence in Srinagar.
The 1925-born poet was presented with the 40th Jnanpith Award as an eminent Kashmiri poet, on November 6, 2008, by the then Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh.
In the year 1948, Rehman Rahi started his career as a PWD and later worked as a Sub-editor with Khidmat newspaper for several years. In 1952 he did his masters in Persian and a decade later another master’s in English. For most of his career, he taught at the University of Kashmir.
Rahi has made an immense huge contribution to the Kashmiri language and poetry. He has authored almost a dozen books and translations and mentored hundreds of students and scholars. For his contributions to the language, he was honored with almost every award.
Rahi is survived by three sons and a daughter.
The funeral prayers will be held at 2 PM on the lawns of the shrine of Khawaja Habibullah Nowshehri.
