Over one dozen arrested in J-K for not standing up for Indian National anthem, Police releases statement

Hours after PTI reported that over a dozen persons were arrested for not standing up to the national anthem during an official event, the Police has said that it is “fake news.”

“There is an unverified news doing round that 14 policemen/persons have been arrested /suspended for disrespecting national anthem. It is clarified that the news is completely false, rather 12 persons have been generally bound down for good behaviour under sections 107/151 of CrPC,” Srinagar Police said in a tweet.

More than a dozen people have been arrested for not standing up when the national anthem was played during a function held here in June with Jammu Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in attendance, officials said on Thursday, PTI had reported earlier.

Quoting officials PTI said, The administration has also suspended a few police personnel for failing to ensure that everyone stood up while the anthem was played.

According to them, some people chose to not stand up during the closing ceremony of the ‘Pedal for Peace’ cycling event, organised in by Jammu Kashmir Police, on June 25, the Police however, denied the news.

The J&K administration took a strong note of the “disrespect” to the national anthem and launched an inquiry into the alleged infraction, they said.

According to them, fourteen people were arrested under sections 107 and 151 CrPc – both of which entitle authorities to arrest or detain a person in anticipation of crime.
