The World Craft Council (WCC) announced its plan to introduce a “Seal of Authenticity” for handmade crafts in Jammu Kashmir, addressing the demand for globally recognized certification for the region’s renowned craftsmanship.
WCC President Saad Al-Qaddumi shared the initiative during the council’s 60th jubilee celebration in Srinagar. Speaking at the event, Al-Qaddumi expressed pride in unveiling the new flagship program, emphasizing its potential to enhance quality assurance and ownership, particularly in the textile industry. He attributed the idea to discussions with J-K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha during his previous visit.
The announcement coincided with the UT-Level Craft Awards ceremony, where artisans were recognized for their outstanding contributions. Al-Qaddumi also highlighted the historic recognition of Srinagar as a “World Craft City,” a title reflecting its cultural heritage and global reputation for artistry.
An agreement signed between the WCC and the J-K government outlines collaborative initiatives, including establishing a craft museum and an incubation center. The partnership aims to position Srinagar as a global hub for crafts, fostering innovation and international collaboration.
“From intricately woven Pashmina shawls to vibrant carpets and paper machie art, Srinagar’s crafts embody tradition, passion, and unparalleled creativity,” Al-Qaddumi said. He reaffirmed the WCC’s commitment to preserving these crafts while empowering artisans and ensuring their legacy for future generations.
Mushtaq Ahmad, a local artisan, welcomed the initiative, saying, “Recognition as a world craft city will promote our arts globally. The government’s efforts, including GI tagging, have already revitalized many traditional crafts.”
The event, hosted by the J-K government from November 25 to 27, brought together delegates from 15 countries, including Kuwait, Australia, and the UK, alongside artisans showcasing exceptional craftsmanship.
The WCC’s celebration marks a significant step in spotlighting Jammu and Kashmir’s rich artistic heritage on the global stage.
