MHA decides to set up permanent unit of NSG in Jammu

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has set up a permanent unit of the National Security Guards (NSG) in Jammu City to enhance the region’s capacity to respond to large-scale militancy incidents.

This strategic deployment is part of a broader security overhaul aimed at protecting high-rise buildings, critical infrastructure, and sensitive public spaces in and around the city.

A dedicated NSG team is now stationed in Jammu, allowing for faster deployment during emergencies, a significant improvement over previous protocols where NSG commandos had to be airlifted from Delhi or Chandigarh, causing delays in response times.

While the exact size of the unit remains undisclosed, authorities assure that the personnel are fully equipped to handle a variety of militancy threats.

This initiative is a part of an extensive anti-militancy strategy developed by the Jammu  Kashmir Police (JKP).

The strategy focuses on enhancing security for vulnerable locations like multi-story buildings, shopping centers, cinemas, and government offices.

Despite the city’s robust security measures, officials are preparing for any potential threats.

In case of a prolonged terrorist engagement, the NSG will serve as backup to frontline units, such as the Special Operations Group (SOG) and other local police forces.

Regular security assessments are being carried out to ensure all vital locations are adequately prepared for quick responses.

The Jammu region has seen a number of militancy incidents targeting security forces in districts like Kathua, Udhampur, and Poonch, resulting in casualties among the security personnel.

However, counter-operations have also led to the elimination of several militants. Notably, last month, three infiltrators from Pakistan were killed in the Akhnoor sector after attempting to breach the Line of Control (LoC) with plans for a major attack in Jammu City.
