Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, Member of Parliament from Srinagar, has urged India’s Home Minister to address the plight of Jammu and Kashmir prisoners held outside the region.
In a letter addressed to the Home Minister, Mehdi has highlighted several critical issues regarding the incarceration of individuals from the valley. “I would like to bring to your notice that several of our people have been incarcerated from different regions of the valley,” Mehdi wrote.
He expresses particular concern for young individuals who are being detained without trial, arguing that “it is unfair on part of the government to hold these people at an age that is decisive for career and nation building.”
Mehdi said that he believes that their release is imperative and has called on the government to expedite the process of freeing these individuals. Mehdi also raises humanitarian concerns about the prisoners who are convicted or undertrial.
“The weather conditions of the Kashmir province of Jammu and Kashmir are different from the rest of the nation,” he notes, suggesting that these prisoners should be relocated to facilities within the valley.
In the letter, he argues that the current situation makes it challenging for their families to visit them both physically and financially. Mehdi has appealed to the Home Minister to take immediate action on these issues, stressing the importance of addressing both the legal and humanitarian aspects of the prisoners’ situation.
