A week after the tragic crash of Air India flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad, officials confirmed on Thursday that 211 victims have been identified through DNA testing. Of these, the bodies of 189 victims have been handed over to their families.
The London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner, carrying 242 people including crew, crashed into a medical complex shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad airport on June 12.
The crash claimed the lives of all but one person on board and killed 29 others on the ground, bringing the total death toll to 270.
Due to the extent of burns and injuries, DNA testing was required to confirm identities. Among the 189 victims whose remains have been returned are 142 Indian nationals, 32 British citizens, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian. Authorities have also handed over the bodies of seven people who died on the ground.
Efforts to identify the remaining victims are ongoing.
