Amid crackdown, BBC Punjabi’s account withheld in India

The official Twitter account of BBC News Punjabi has been withheld in India amid a massive police crackdown on Waris Punjab de head, Amritpal Singh, reported NDTV.

In the past weeks, more than a hundred accounts have been withheld in India which includes the accounts of various journalists as well.

On Tuesday, the Government withheld the account of BBC Punjabi. A message on BBC News Punjabi’s account reads, “account has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand.”

The move comes amid a massive operation to arrest Amritpal Singh, just weeks after his supporters broke into a police station seeking the release of one of his aides.

While Amritpal Singh remains untraceable, at least 300 persons have been arrested in the crackdown so far.
