The administration at AMU has decided to rename the City School to ‘Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh Aligarh Muslim University City School’.
“The school has been renamed to honour Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh, notable AMU alumnus, Indian freedom fighter, journalist, social reformer, writer, revolutionary and President in the Provisional Government of India, which served as the Indian Government in exile during World War I from Kabul in 1915.” the university administration said.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Tariq Mansoor said “With the re-naming, AMU pays tribute to Raja Mahendra Pratap, who attended the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh, which later became the Aligarh Muslim University. Raja Mahendra Pratap’s name is counted among the prominent alumni of the university. His father and grandfather were close to the educationist and reformer Sir Syed Ahmad Khan”.
The move came after descendants of Raja Mahindra Pratap, members of the BJP and the RSS had demanded that the University’s school be renamed after him and the rest of the land that Pratap had given to the AMU be returned to them.
Following the demand, the Uttar Pradesh government had ordered a probe regarding the issue.

The Jat king, according to the University, had given about 3.04-acre land for setting up a school on a 90-year lease
The claims that the university was built on the Raja’s land, however, were dismissed by several historians.
In 2019, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath, while campaigning during the by-elections in Aligarh’s Iglas seat, had said that the government would establish a university in Singh’s name.
Yogi had said that Pratap had not been recognized by the AMU even after making contributions to the University.
