Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to visit Jammu Kashmir on May 30, where he will address Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and meet families impacted by Pakistani shelling in Poonch district. During the visit, Shah is expected to distribute appointment letters to the next of kin of those killed in the shelling and visit religious sites damaged in the cross-border firing, as per Daily Excelsior.
Shah will arrive in Jammu on the evening of May 29 and will chair a high-level security review meeting. The meeting will be attended by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, top officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Army, the paramilitary forces, JK Police, the intelligence agencies, and civil administration. Senior officers from the BSF, CRPF, Intelligence Bureau, NIA, and top Army commanders will also take part. The agenda includes updates on anti-terror operations, the anti-infiltration grid, and the progress of Operation Sindoor—an offensive targeting nine terror sites across the border in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Security arrangements for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra will also be reviewed.
On May 30, Shah will travel to Khanetar, about nine kilometers from Poonch town, to address BSF jawans at their unit headquarters. Later, at Dak Bungalow, he will meet civilians who were affected by the shelling on the night of May 7–8, which followed Operation Sindoor. The attack claimed the lives of 13 civilians, including four children, and damaged three religious sites. Several residential and commercial properties were also destroyed.
In neighbouring Rajouri district, a JKAS officer and two civilians were also killed in the shelling.
During an earlier visit to Poonch, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had announced government jobs for the families of those killed and hinted at a central relief package for damaged properties. Sources say the package is nearly final and may be announced during Shah’s visit.
This will be Shah’s third visit to Jammu Kashmir since April 6 and his first since Operation Sindoor, which was launched in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, mostly tourists. Shah had visited Kashmir the day after the massacre.
