One policeman was injured in an ongoing encounter that broke out between Government forces and militants in the Nowgam area of Verinag in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
An official said that searchlights have been installed at the spot to not give chance to trapped militants to take “advantage” of the dark and escape from the spot.
Earlier, officials said that a joint team of 19 RR of the Indian Army, Jammu Kashmir Police and CRPF after receiving information about the presence of militants launched a cordon and search operation in the area.
As the joint team of forces intensified searches towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the party, triggering an encounter.
An intermittent exchange of gunfire is on and two to three militants are believed to be trapped in the area, as per the official.
One Policeman has been injured in the firing, Kashmir Zone Police said in a tweet.
“#Encounter has started at Nowgam Shahabad, Dooru area of #Anantnag. In the initial firing, 01 police personnel got injured & was shifted to hospital. Police & SFs are on the job. Further details shall follow,” Kashmir Zone Police tweeted.
