As Kashmir gets a rail link, Kashmiri pandit body ask when they will return home

As the much-awaited railway link connecting Kashmir to the rest of India nears inauguration, the Kashmiri Pandit community has issued a fresh call to the government—not for trains, but for a return home.

Sanjay K Tickoo, President of the Kashmiri Pandit Sangharsh Samiti (KPSS), said the community is watching the celebrations with mixed feelings. “Steel and tunnels may bridge mountains, but who will bridge the distance between us and our homeland?” he asked.

More than 30 years after the 1990 migration, Pandits remain scattered across India, with many still in transit accommodations. “We await not infrastructure, but restoration—with dignity, safety, and truth,” Tickoo said.

In a representation submitted to the Home Minister, KPSS has demanded a concrete rehabilitation roadmap within 60 days. “Rehabilitation cannot just mean jobs and quarters—it must mean justice, political representation, and a commitment to never rewrite what happened to us,” Tickoo said.

He also warned that if the government fails to respond, the KPSS would seek legal recourse. “This exile has gone on too long. Either announce a plan or tell us clearly that return is no longer a national priority.”
