The Supreme Court on Tuesday closed a involving former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kalyan Singh in connection with the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition matter in Ayodhya.
The court cited that a larger bench has already delivered a judgment over the matter and said that “nothing survives in the matter now”.
Petitioner Mohammad Aslam Bhure had filed a petition in the Supreme Court in 1991 against various BJP leaders.
Significantly, on 6 December 1992, the Babri structure in Ayodhya was demolished by a mob. A case was registered against many leaders including BJP veteran LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti. After this case, there were communal riots across the country. More than two thousand people lost their lives in these riots.
The Supreme Court said that the petitioner has also died, so there is no justification for the contempt petition. Along with this, the Supreme Court also closed the case related to contempt of court against former UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh in the Babri demolition case.
In 2019, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Ram Janmabhoomi in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute.
