Riots hit Bengaluru on Tuesday over a social media post allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammed. In this clash, 3 people were killed and dozens of policemen also injured.
Police said in a statement that the person responsible for the offensive post, which has since been deleted, had been arrested. Police gave the name of the accused as Naveen who is the nephew of the congress MLA whose house was burnt and vandalized in the riot.
According to a senior police official, the three former ministers were insecure because of the rise of local MLA, Akhanda Srinivasamurthy and the trio is suspected to have used a former corporator to corner the minister. The former corporator also saw this as a chance of resurrection by joining forces with the three ex-ministers.
The Facebook post offending a community’s sensibilities by the Congress MLA’s nephew appeared as a perfect opportunity to gang up against the elected minister, the official added.
Karnataka BJP and IT cell Minister Amit Malviya used social media to maintain their old script and addressed the whole incident as “peace-loving Hindus vs violent Muslim mobs”.
As per the news reports, Naveen’s mother was saved from the mob by local Muslim youth. A video got viral, where some Muslims made a human chain to protect a Hindu temple from the rioters.
