After the shooting of a Black man, Jacob Blake Jr. by police in southeastern Kenosha Wisconsin, huge protests erupted where people defied the dawn-till-dusk curfew, leading to clashes followed by the police firing tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
Ben Crump, attorney of Jacob Blake Jr., said that Blake was paralyzed and shot multiple times, and then left fighting for his life by the police.
Three of his young sons who were inside the car aged 3, 5 and 8 saw how their father was killed by the police according to attorney Ben.
In an interview, attorney Ben stated how Blake was gunned down with no mercy by the police, more than seven gunshots were fired at him when he was trying to break the quarrel between two women.
A bystander who witnessed all this recorded the encounter video which went viral in no time. Police have been accused of using indiscriminate lethal force against African Americans.
The police have yet to explain why Blake was shot.
On Tuesday, for the third night in a row, a minimum of four armoured patrol vehicles that fired tear gases into the crowd of protesters had been deployed by the Kenosha police. The protests in response hurled water bottles, bricks, firecrackers, and other objects back at police.
Wisconsin Governor, Tony Evers has now declared an emergency and also vowed to bring more National Guard troops to restore the peace, law, and order.
“They shot my son seven times. Seven times! Like he didn’t matter,” Jacob Blake Sr., trembling with emotion, told reporters. “My son matters. He’s a human being and he matters.”
Julia Jackson, Blake’s mother, said her son “has been fighting for his life.” She also said her son would disapprove of damage done to the city, declaring, “It doesn’t reflect my son or my family.”
Police officials have blamed the outside agitators for breaking the law and vandalizing various businesses.
“It’s going to take a miracle for Jacob Blake Jr. to ever walk again,” attorney Ben said, adding that the family intended to bring a lawsuit to hold wrongdoers accountable.
Blake’s family and the protester are demanding the prosecution of those officers who shot him.
The shooting is under investigation by the Wisconsin Justice Department, which has released no details.
