Reclined on a bed in the high-stakes Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at SKIMS Soura, a young police officer fights for his life with a bullet lodged in his head.
Inspector Masroor Ahmed Wani, a resident of Eidgah, Narwara Yechpora, stationed at Srinagar District Police Lines (DPL), fell victim to gunfire while engaged in a friendly game with colleagues at the Eidgah playground.
Masroor, a family man with a wife and a young daughter awaiting him at home, now teeters on the brink.
Beside Masroor’s hospital bed, his father remains in a state of shock, unable to utter a word. “He is in shock, unable to speak, as his son’s condition remains critical. He prays fervently for Masroor’s recovery, as do other family members,” a relative of Masroor said.
The officer had been relishing a rare moment of relaxation, partaking in a cricket match with friends and fellow officers on a sunny Sunday afternoon. However, the atmosphere was soon shattered by a sudden burst of gunfire, leaving Masroor grievously wounded.
Eyewitnesses from the area described the harrowing incident. “Chaos erupted on the cricket field as Masroor was sprinting between the wickets and removing his glove when a hail of bullets rained down, striking him in the line of duty,” they said.
Swift action from his colleagues and friends proved vital, as they rushed him to a nearby hospital in a frantic bid to stabilise his condition.
News of the incident sent shockwave through the local community, who expressed their deep sympathy for the wounded officer and his family.
At the same time, sources from the hospital said that Inspector Masroor’s condition is perilous, with a gunshot wound to his head. He is closely monitored in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of SKIMS Soura.
“We maintain hope for his recovery,” the sources affirmed. “His vital signs have not deteriorated further.”
The police, too, have taken notice of the incident, and an ongoing investigation is in progress. In response, security measures in Srinagar city have been heightened, including increased frisking, the establishment of mobile checkpoints, and thorough inspections of vehicles and individuals at various locations within Srinagar.
