Kashmiri Scholar Winning Mirza Saaib Bég and his team which included Nandita Venkatesan (India), Tafadzwa Matika (Zimbabwe), Andrés Ordoñez-Buitrago (Colombia) have won the Weidenfeld Hoffmann scholarship debate conducted by Oxford Union-  a 200-year old debating society. The Weidenfeld Hoffmann Scholars' Debate is the key element of the leadership programme offered by the Wiedenfield Scholarship under which Saaib was granted admission. Last week Facebook’s oversight board upheld the ban on Donald Trump and the debate motion focussed on this issue. As covid-19 takes a firmer grip on India and various other countries across the globe, the efforts of Kashmiri doctors in the diaspora are earning global praises. 300 Kashmiri doctors living abroad, are providing free treatment to people around the clock in various countries including Saudi Arabia, Dubai, the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. According to news reports, Kashmiri doctors in the diaspora have treated thousands of patients after gathering under the banner of the Kashmir Healthcare Support group, and have also given free consultancy to more than 20,000 patients online, since July. In a continuation of a crackdown against indigenous voices, Facebook and Twitter have taken down prominent voices for the Kashmir valley. The Twitter handle of Stand with Kashmir was suspended by Twitter from its platform for the second time in less than two months. Stand with Kashmir is an amalgam of Kashmiris in the diaspora. The globally renowned group is highlighting the Human Rights violations taking place across the Kashmir valley. Public Anthropologist Award is given to an anthropologist who has published an outstanding contribution that follows these topics: violence, war, poverty, social movements, freedom, aid, rights, injustice, inequality, social exclusion, racism, health, and environmental challenges. Ather Zia is a poet, short fiction writer, and columnist. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Gender Studies program at the University of Northern Colorado Greeley.
