April 25 More than 73,000 transgenders have been arrested for extorting money from railway passengers in the past four years, with over 20,000 alone last year, the railway ministry has said in a reply to an RTI query. The data assumes significance as passengers have complained of harassment by transgenders who often board trains and extort money from them. Some of these passengers also had to face abuses, in the worst cases of physical assault, incase they refused to give in to such demands, officials said. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has been regularly conducting special drives to check such instances, they said. April 24 The weekly two-day closure of the 270-km Kashmir highway for troop movement, which came into force last month, has thrown life out of gear in both Kashmir as well as Jammu regions as a complete chaos is being witnessed today on the 270 kilometer stretch. The state government has ordered the highway closed for civil and public transport from Baramulla to Udhampur every Sunday and Wednesday to facilitate security forces movement for the Lok Sabha election duty. April 23 A Kashmiri PhD scholar was arrested in a joint operation of the Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab Police from the Central University in Bathinda today for alleged militancy links, IANS quoted police as having said. The report said that the accused, Hilal Ahmed, 28, is being taken to Jammu Kashmir for further investigation. “The arrest was made following a raid conducted in the varsity campus,” IANS quoted Bathinda Senior Superintendent of Police Nanak Singh as having said.
