Former vice-chairman JK Waqf Board and senior People’s Conference leader, Nizamuddin Bhat has appealed to the Union Home Minister and Jammu and Kashmir LG to reconsider the decision of arresting three clerics of religious standing from South Kashmir under Public Safety Act. The J-K administration has initiated an exercise to allot ownership rights to West Pakistani and other refugees over 46,666 kanals of land which they were allotted in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts in 1954 after their migration from Pakistan post partition, Daily Excelsior, a Jammu based News organization reported. Weather remained dry in Jammu Kashmir during the last 24 hours as the Meteorological (MeT) office said on Friday that the same conditions are likely to continue. “Weather is likely to remain dry in J&K during the next 24 hours,” an official of the MeT department said. Srinagar had 14.2, Pahalgam 8.8 and Gulmarg 7.8 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature. In Ladakh region, Drass town had 4.6, Kargil 12.8 and Leh 7 as the minimum temperature. Jammu had 20.4, Katra 19.2, Batote 16.7, Banihal 15 and Bhaderwah 16.8 as the minimum temperature.

Road from Hallan to Manzgam in South Kashmir's Kulgam district is in a dilapidated condition, causing inconvenience to commuters travelling on the stretch. Locals told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that in absence of repairs, potholes had developed on a large stretch of the road. “It is difficult to travel on the road,” said a local Ghulam Rasool. “People suffer during the harsh winters. Sometimes we have to carry the dead body on shoulders from Manzgam to Hallan as the road remains non motorable", he said, adding that private transporters suspended cab service on the road in the face of the dilapidated condition of the road. After devastating floods ravaged Kashmir in 2014, a comprehensive flood mitigation plan was announced and so far phase 1 has been completed while work on the second phase is going to start shortly. Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood control Naresh Kumar told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that work on phase 2 is going to start soon. He said that in phase 1 their target was to increase the capacity of river Jhelum to 40,000 cusecs and under phase 2 the capacity will be taken to 60,000 cusecs. Body of a 42-year-old woman was found and retrieved from river Lidder in Pahalgam of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district this afternoon. Preliminary reports reaching GNS, suggest that the woman drowned while she was taking bath in the river. Some passersby on spotting the body informed the police, who on reaching the site retrieved the body and shifted it to PHC Pahalgam for necessary medico-legal formalities. A police official identifying the woman as Zareena Begum (42), wife Mohd Ashraf, resident of Amadwagad Aishmuqam, told GNS that the body continues to lie in mortuary at PHC Pahalgam. “We have in the meantime initiated investigations to collect necessary details into the cause of her death”, the official further said. Five people, including two influential clerics, from south Kashmir were detained under preventive laws on Thursday, officials here said. Among those detained are Moulana Mushtaq Ahmad Veeri and Abdul Rashid Dawoodi, they said. The authorities are contemplating booking the clerics under the Public Safety Act and shifting them to a Jammu jail, they said. The PSA is an administrative law that allows detention without charge or trial for up to two years in some cases. Further details are awaited.–(PTI)
