Flash floods disrupt Yatra at JK’s Vaishno Devi Shrine

Heavy rainfall triggered flash floods near Vaishno Devi Shrine in Katra town of JK’s Reasi district. Officials said that all devotees are safe and evacuated to safer places. However, the flash floods have disrupted the movement of devotees. Katra town witnessed heavy rainfall late Friday night forcing the temple authorities to stop the upward movement of devotees for a few hours. Official sources told news agency Kashmir News Trust that only yatris from Bhawan to Katra were allowed to return to Katra. Many yatris had to return midway from Adhkumari after the yatra was stopped. The remains of an Indian army soldier have been found more than 38 years after he went missing on a glacier at the highest point along the heavily militarized contested border between India and Pakistan in Kashmir, officials said Wednesday, Associated Press reported. The soldier and 17 other colleagues were occupying a ridge on Siachen Glacier, high in the Karakoram range in disputed Kashmir’s Ladakh region, in May 1984 when they were hit by an avalanche, officials said. During this attack, one brother died on the spot and the other was injured in the Chotigam area of south Kashmir's Shopian district. The deceased was identified as Sunil Kumar son of Arjun Nath and his brother Pintu Kumar was injured in the attack.
