A local court here did not consider the bail plea of a close aide of dread deceased gunman Papa Kishtwari saying that the offences allegedly committed by the accused are serious and heinous and the offence is against the state and society. Ghulam Rasool Ganaie son of Muhammad Subhan, a resident of Garoora Bandipora had been arrested by police station Nishat in connection with an FIR 16/2002 under section 302, 364, 201, 120B, RPC in connection with the murder of a Nishat Contractor Ali Muhammad Mir. Farmers hire labourers, machinery to clean canals for irrigation in south Kashmir

With parts of Kashmir facing drought-like situation due to low water level, farmers on their own are arranging bulldozers and other machinery to clean canals so that they can irrigate their fields. Fayaz Ahmad, a farmer from Kakapora Pulwama said that lift irrigation schemes weren't made functional when water level was normal in Jhelum. “We repeatedly requested authorities to clean canals which aren't dependent on lift irrigation schemes so that more water can reach paddy fields,” he added. “Now with their pleas falling on deaf ears, we hired bulldozers and other machinery and cleaned all canals in the area due to which the carrying capacity of canals has increased and more and more land is getting irrigated,” he said. Army trooper killed in ‘accidental’ grenade blast in Kupwara

An Army trooper was killed in an accidental grenade blast in the frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara, official sources said. They said a grenade exploded accidentally when the victim Signal-Man identified as Bharat Yaduwanshi was on sentry duty at Gonipora Gugtiyal Camp in Kupwara. Sources told news agency Kashmir News Trust that the injured soldier was rushed to 428 Field Hospital Zangli, Kupwara, where he succumbed to his injuries. The dead body was handed over to the concerned Unit, after the completion of medico, and legal formalities while police initiated proceedings under section 174 CrPc. (KNT)

Over thousand locals have joined militancy since 2014

The Bhartiya Janta party, as per stats, has failed to contain militant recruitment in Jammu Kashmir since it rose to power in 2014. Data available to The Kashmiriyat reveals that the Congress-led UPA government saw as many as 154 local youths taking up arms to join militant groups, however, the number has drastically risen to 1010 since 2014. In 2014, the number of locals joining militancy was 53, in 2015, it reached 66 before touching the highest mark of 88 in 2016, in 2017, the number rose further to 126 and in 2018, 218 local youth joined militancy, the highest number in a decade, while in 2019 the number dropped to 139. NIA raids multiple locations in Jammu Kashmir for second consecutive day

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday conducted fresh raids at multiple locations in Jammu Kashmir in a major crackdown on the cross LoC (Line of Control) trade and militancy funding case. The joint operation was carried out by the NIA and Jammu Kashmir police along with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The joint team led by the NIA also conducted searches at other locations in Srinagar as a part of the crackdown on militancy in north Kashmir. Vegetable prices hiked by 56.36 percent in last one year, Record high since 2012

The prices of goods across India are soaring. The latest Price-based Inflation (WPI) shows a rise to a 15.88 per cent in May, it highest under the current series launched in 2012, government data showed. The latest stats of WPI combined with retail inflation data from Monday indicate supply-driven inflation is showing no signs of relief anytime soon. According to reports, the data showed, inflation in food articles in May was 12.34 per cent, as prices of vegetables, wheat, fruits and potato witnessed a sharp spike against the last year's prices. The rate of price rise in vegetables was 56.36 per cent, while in wheat it was 10.55 per cent and in egg, meat and fish, inflation was 7.78 per cent.
