A blaze has broken out in a forest in Tral area in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, official sources said. They told GNS that a fire broke out in Chan Kitaab Tral this afternoon. “Soon as the locals sighted billowing smoke from the forest, the Fire and Emergency Services Department and Forest Protection Force were called in”, they said. “Several teams from the departments reached the site”, they said adding however due to difficult terrain, nothing much could be done. The flares were continuing – when this report was being filed. (GNS)

Husband allegedly hammers wife to death in Jammu Kashmir

A woman was allegedly hammered to death by her husband in Mendhar area in Poonch district, officials said. They told GNS that one Gazanfar Bi (55), wife of Mohammad Khalil, resident of Ari was found in a pool of blood at her house today. "She has been prima-facie allegedly hammered on head by her husband", they said. "A police team reached the site and took the body to a nearby hospital", they said. Meanwhile, a police official told GNS that they have arrested the accused alongwith weapon of offence and also registered a case in this regard for further investigations. "The accused person stands arrested alongside the weapon of offence", the official said adding details once available will be shared accordingly. (GNS)

Bagh-e-Methab, Ishber Nishat residents demand macadamization of road

The residents of Mehtab Enclave in Bagh-e-Mehtab area of Srinagar, here have urged the authorities to macadamize the road. Speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the residents said that the road in their enclave is in shambles as it has been neglected by the authorities for a long time. “We have approached several higher ups so far, but all in vain,” said Muthar Ahmed Shah, a local resident. “We appeal to the authorities to macadamize our roads at an earliest,” said another local resident, Dr. Gulzar Ahmed. At SMHS, one patient walks into de-addiction centre every 12 minutes: Report

The number of patients visiting OPDs in the Valley’s largest District De-addiction Centre in SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, jumped 75% to 41,110 in the year-ending March 2023, Indian Express reported. This means that one patient walked into the OPD every 12 minutes. As per the report, in the previous financial year, over 21,000 follow-up patients and 2,000 new patients had turned up at the DDC while in '22, the number of new users has gone past 3000 and follow-up patients beyond 38000. Nearly 75 percent of the patients at the DDC are users of injected heroin, with many diagnosed with Hepatitis B, C, and in some cases HIV. A militant has been killed while two to three more likely trapped as forces thwarted repeated attempts of militants to escape. Search operation in Kulgam enters day 2

On the second day, the Government forces continued the cordon and search operation in the Manzgam area of Kulgam. Earlier, officials said that the three troopers were killed during an encounter that raged in the area on Friday evening. Two more troopers who were injured are being treated at the hospital, they said. Meanwhile, an official said that there has been no contact with the militants after the initial one. The central government will try to get Lok Sabha’s approval for the passage of the Forest Conservation Amendment Bill, 2023 Wednesday.
