December 27 Firdous Qadri Scores of people on Thursday holding banners and placards staged a protest at press colony and sought administration’s intervention in preserving the mother tongue. Holding banners that read “Kashrin henz pehchan, kashir zaban kashir zaban” and “save Mother tongue of Kashmir” these protesters gathered under the banner of Kashmiri Language Union (KLU) in Srinagar. Sanitation Drive launched in Bandipora

December 27 Shabir Khan The Municipality Committee of Bandipora on Thursday led by its Chairman Khursheed Ahmad along with Staff of MCB conducted a cleanliness drive at ward number 11 and ward 12 of District. Locals told The Kashmiriyat that scores of employees along with the locals of the area participated in the sanitation drive after which the chairman of the body, Khursheed Ahmed appealed the people of Kashmir to keep their surrounding clean. The general public of the concerned wards appreciated this drive with a hope that the drive will continue in future. On this occasion, the chairman appealed the people of the two wards to use dustbins and not throw garbage anywhere.

IED planted on Bandipora-Srinagar-highway defused

December 27 Shabir Khan The Government forces on Thursday recovered and defused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Dar Mohalla Garoora area on Bandipora- Srinagar highway. An official said that the IED was planted by the militants in Garoora area of Bandipora. Detailing the incident, he said that a patrol party of 13RR recovered the IED on the highway around 7 am by ED Dog. Soon, they said, traffic movement on the highway was suspended. A Bomb disposal squad of Bandipora police defused the IED around 12:15 pm without causing any damage, following which traffic movement was restored on the road. The official said that a major tragedy was averted by the forces by defusing the 20 Kg IED.

Pheran Wearing Photograph of PhD Scholar Turned Militant Goes Viral

December 27 The photograph of a Ph.D Scholar turned militant, Waseem Ahmed Rather from Quimoh area of South Kashmir's Kulgam District has gone viral over social networking sites. Waseem who had joined Militancy in May this year can be seen wearing a Pheran and holding an AK 47 Rifle in the photograph that is doing rounds on social Media. The last time Waseem was spotted was at the funeral of his close friend Adil on 06 May. Kashmir Shivers Under Cold, Coldest Night in 28 Years

December 27 The Kashmir valley witnessed the coldest night of the season as the night temperatures dipped to Minus 7.6 degrees Celsius  in the Summer capital of Jammu Kashmir. Pertinently the night was the coldest in the past twenty eight years. A MET Department official told that the cold weather conditions are likely to continue for another four to five days with chances of snow on the 1st and second day of January. Pahalgam recorded minus 8.3 degree Celsius, and the minimum temperature in Gulmarg was minus 9 degree Celsius. Leh recorded minus 8.4 degree and it was minus 16.2 degree in Kargil. Jammu recorded 4.3 degrees, Katra 3.7 degrees, Batote minus 2.2 degree, Banihal minus 3.5 degree and Bhaderwah minus 2.5 degree as the night’s lowest temperatures.

Police Shielding a Known Offender in Rajbagh, Alleges Srinagar Family

December 26 The family of a youth who was recently stabbed by a known offender from Rajbagh in Srinagar has accused the Jammu Kashmir Police of favoring the accused. A family member of Asif while speaking to The Kashmiriyat said that Asif was near Nehru Park on Sunday when he was stabbed by the culprit. "They had an argument and the accused identified as Hashim ran away after stabbing Asif in his back," a family member said. He said that the family immediately lodged an FIR against Hashim in the concerned Police station, Rajbagh, however no action has been initiated against the culprit as of yet, They said that "the culprit is a known offender and has committed many offences in the past, however the Police favours the accused and is backed by his sister who is a known lawyer...

Police Officer Found Dead in Humhama Area

December 26 A police officer was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Humhama area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Wednesday. Sources informed The Kashmiriyat that a Sub-Inspector of Jammu Kashmir Police identified as Abdul Hamid Din was found dead in a hotel at Humhama in Srinagar. Hamid is a resident of Trikanjan area in North Kashmir's Baramulla District and was posted with Anti Hijacking wing of police at Srinagar Airport. The Police has taken cognizance of the incident started investigation into the matter. Meanwhile they said that as per initial investigations it seems that the officer has died due to a cardiac attack.

Earthquake Shakes Jammu Kashmir

December 26 Slight tremors were felt on Wednesday after a low intensity earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale, occurred in Jammu Kashmir. However, the MeT officials said that no reports of casualty or damage was received. The quake was felt at 9.52 in the morning and its epicenter was in Jammu Kashmir, they said.

250 KV Transformer Stolen in Ganderbal

December 25 Rayees Shah In the first of its kind of incidents, Unknown persons on Tuesday stole a 250KV transformer in Harran area of Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district, plunging the area into darkness. Reports said that the thieves stole 250KV transformer  last night. Due to non-availability of electricity, the residents said that have been put to inconvenience especially students who are appearing in different examinations. PDD officer Mr Javaid Ahmad said Some unknown persons have stolen transformer from Tehlipora Harran area of Ganderbal.The Executive engineer of power department has lodged a complaint in this regard. Meanwhile Ganderbal police registered a case in this regard.
