90 percent electricity restored in Sopore: Officials

Nearly 90 percent of electricity has been restored in the Sopore areas of North Kashmir's Baramulla district, officials said on Sunday. "It was a strenuous effort by the officials of the power development department that ensured restoration of electricity in entire Sopore division after the valley witnessed outages due to continuous snowfall from last three days," an official said. He said that for the first time that the PDD department was able to restore the power supply within the shortest possible time of 10-hours. "The PDD linemen despite all odds are working tirelessly; it was because of their efforts that around Sunday noon 90 percent of supply in the Sopore division was restored," the official said.

Body of a Kupwara youth, who died in Khanna in Punjab, is among six other mortal remains stranded at Banihal in Ramban district along Srinagar-Jammu highway. Reports reaching GNS said that the mortal remains of six persons belonging to different districts of Kashmir valley are left stranded with the thoroughfare yet to be cleared of accumulated snow at several places. Among the six bodies includes that of a youth from Pazipora in frontier Kupwara district, who died at Khanna in Punjab state. Covid 19- 687 cases, 3 deaths reported in last 24 hours in Jammu Kashmir

Jammu Kashmir reported 687 fresh covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, while three deaths have been reported across the region, officials said on Sunday. 437 of the fresh cases were reported from the Jammu division and 250 from Kashmir. Giving district-wise details of the fresh cases, the officials said that Srinagar reported the highest 131 cases, Baramulla 42, Budgam 50, Pulwama 10, Kupwara 2, Anantnag 3, Bandipora 4, Ganderbal 5, Kulgam 3, Shopian 0. In Jammu division, Jammu district reported the highest with 292 cases, Udhampur 7, Rajouri 12, Doda 12, Kathua 38, Samba 16, Kishtwar 1, Poonch 8, Ramban 25, Reasi 26.

An encounter has broken out between militants and government forces in the Hassanpora area of South Kashmir's Kulgam district. Officials told The Kashmiriyat that Joint forces of the 1 RR of Indian Army and Jammu Kashmir Police launched a cordon and search operation in the Hasanpora Kulgam, after receiving inputs about the presence of militants in the area. During the cordon, the militants opened fire on forces and as per the latest reports, the exchange of gunfire is still on. Kashmir Zone Police confirmed the encounter in a tweet. “#Encounter has started at Hasanpora area of #Kulgam. Police and security forces are on the job. Weatherman on Sunday forecast dry weather till January 16 at most places in Jammu and Kashmir. “As expected, weather improved significantly in J&K.
