Shopian Encounter: Militant killed in ongoing gunfight

An unidentified militant has been killed in an ongoing operation in Kilbal area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday. A senior police while confirming to GNS said that a militant whose identity is yet to be ascertained was killed in an ongoing encounter. Earlier, a joint team of Police, army’s 34 and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation on the input generated by JK Police in the area. As the joint team of forces intensified searches towards the target spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces triggering off a gunfight.(GNS)

Driver injured after Truck plunges into deep gorge on Jmu-Sgr NHW

A driver sustained injuries after the truck he was driving in skidded off the road and fell into the deep gorge on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway near Shalgadi Chamelwas area on Saturday morning. Reports reaching to GNS said that a truck bearing registration number HR38U 4552, was on its way from Jammu towards Srinagar, when the driver lost control over the vehicle and it plunged into deep gorge. They said, soon after getting information about the incident, a team of locals alongside NGO Banihal volunteers & police rescued the driver and subsequently shifted him to SDH Banihal for treatment. The injured driver has been identified as Ramesh Kumar (36) son of Surum Chand, a resident of Chennai area of Udhumpur. A case has been registered in this regard.(GNS)

One Person Arrested For ‘scandalous online campaign’ against Kashmiri students

The Jammu Kashmir Police on Friday said that one Iftikhar Ahmad Dar from Anantnag was arrested for carrying a “scandalous online campaign against Kashmiri students studying outside, causing anguish to students and parents.” The Jammu Kashmir Police in a tweet said a case (FIR No. 23/2022) at police station Anantnag stands registered under relevant sections of law. Iftikhar Ahmed Dar is a resident of Sarnal in the main town of Anantnag. He had recently run an online video on his page where he had accused students studying outside Jammu Kashmir of being a threat to Islam as they were involved in 'unislamic' activities.

A police official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that a Head constable Mohammad Hussain Dar (48) was hit by a train while he was performing his duties near GRP (Panzgam), resulting in his on the spot death. Two persons are feared dead in river Chenab in Ramban district, officials said on Friday. They said the truck, they were travelling in, is parked on Jammu-Srinagar and the duo was seen by someone drowning. The person subsequently raised the alarm and massive searches headed by SSP Ramban Mohita Sharma and SHO Ramban Sandeep Charak. A day after registering a dip in fresh Covid-19 infections, Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday saw significant rise in new cases with 4651 confirmed in last 24 hours while three persons succumbed to the virus during the time, officials said. They said 1546 of the fresh cases were confirmed from Jammu Division and 3105 from Kashmir valley, taking the overall tally to 366851. After ten days of continuous daily rise, J&K had seen a dip in daily cases on Monday with 2827 while 3499 infections were reported on Sunday. Authorities have ordered closure of Block Office Uri on Tuesday after two employees tested positive for covid-19. “In order to check the spread of infection in office, the office of BDO Uri shall remain closed for two days (January 19 and 20),” reads an order by BDO Uri. “Meanwhile all the employees of block Uri are hereby directed to go for COVID-19 test,” the order, a copy of which lies with GNS, reads, adding, “Furthermore the official work of block shall be carried from home via online mode for these two days.” The employees have been asked to remain available to public on phone call. A family on Tuesday staged a protest at Shelipora Achabal here in this south Kashmir district, alleging murder of their daughter by her in-laws over dowry issue. The family and relatives of the lady, joined by neighbours, hit the street near Shelipora Achabal and demanded action against the in-laws of woman.
