South Kashmir sees worrying rise in number of drug abusers

In a worrying trend, South Kashmir districts are seeing a fresh spurt in the number of drug addicts while less drug abusers are visiting the drug de-addiction facilities set up by the government, officials said. Health officials, wishing not to be named, told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), around one percent of the total drug abusers are turning up to addiction treatment facilities functional in all hospitals of J&K and the number is miniscule in southern districts. Figures available with the KNO suggest that the addiction treatment facility at GMC Anantnag in 2020 recorded arrivals of 267 drug abusers in year 2020 followed by 638 in year 2021 and over 400 visits in ensuing year. At least 200 lumpy skin disease cases in the cattle have been reported in south Kashmir's Pulwama district so far. Top officials of the animal husbandry department told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that over 200 cases of lumpy disease have been reported among cattle in different areas of Pulwama district. They said that among them 11 have died who have been buried by following all SoPs besides that around 112 have already recovered and rest are active. Meer Irfan Two civilians and an army trooper were injured in an ongoing encounter at Batpora area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Monday evening. After 10 years, building of a vital animal husbandry centre in upper belt of Shopian is incomplete causing inconvenience to people. Locals from Zawoora village of Shopian told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that authorities after repeated requests started construction of the Veterinary Centre in 2012 but since then they are waiting for its completion. Shakeel Khan, a local, said that the under-construction building was abandoned by the concerned authorities. Student hangs self to death in Pulwama

An 11th-class student was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside his room at his residential house in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. Reports said that 18-year-old student (name withheld), a resident of Malwari, Newa Pulwama allegedly hung himself to death on Thursday. He was shifted to District Hospital Pulwama where doctors declared him brought dead. Police have taken cognizance and initiated proceedings under law. (KNT)

Danishwar Hameed Unknown burglars broke into a storage shed and stole nearly 250 boxes of Apples in Amnoo area of south Kashmir's Kulgam district. Speaking to The Kashmiriyat, locals said that unknown burglars broke into the shed and stole nearly 250 apple boxes packed in the store room. "During the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, thieved decamped with 250 boxes of apple from the house of Mohammad Iqbal Shah, a local resident," they said. Iqbal said that he will register a complaint at the nearest Police station.
