Centre releases ₹17.19 crore to Jammu Kashmir under old age pension scheme

The Government of India has disbursed ₹17.19 crore to Jammu and Kashmir under the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) over the last five years, according to data presented in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

Part of the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), the scheme provides a monthly pension of ₹200 to senior citizens aged between 60 and 79 years, and ₹500 to those aged 80 and above. States and Union Territories are encouraged to supplement the amount so that most beneficiaries receive close to ₹1,000 per month.

For Jammu and Kashmir, the central government released ₹2.28 crore in 2020–21, ₹3.50 crore in 2021–22, ₹1.92 crore in 2022–23, ₹7.31 crore in 2023–24, and ₹3.16 crore in 2024–25. The largest allocation was made in 2023–24, while 2022–23 saw the lowest.

When asked whether the Centre intends to raise the pension amount to ₹1,000 for the 60–79 age group and ₹1,500 for those above 79, Minister of State for Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan stated that there is currently no such proposal under consideration.
