Challai Kalan, 40 coldest day winter period begins in Kashmir

During Chilla-i-Kalan, the coldest phase of Kashmir’s winter, temperatures plummet drastically, freezing water bodies and causing disruptions.

Residents combat the biting cold using Kangri firepots due to erratic electricity.

This period triggers health issues, especially for children and the elderly, with anticipated snowfall in higher areas causing further interruptions.

Lasting 40 days until January 31, Chilla-i-Kalan restricts outdoor activities and historically led to food shortages, now mitigated by improved highway access.

Post-Chilla-i-Kalan, the region faces Chillai-Khurd for 20 days and Chillai-Bachha for 10, prolonging the cold impact.

Despite these challenges, locals adapt with indoor activities and traditional remedies to endure the harsh winter.
