Police on Sunday arrested a man accused of fraudulently promising to secure the release of a detainee in Srinagar’s Nowhatta area.
According to a police statement, a complaint was filed by Showkat Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Zahid Pora, Hawal, alleging that Fayaz Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Sheikh Colony, Makhdoom Sahib, had taken Rs 30,000 from him under false pretenses.
Fayaz claimed he could influence the release of Showkat’s brother, Sajad Sheikh, who was in custody under an FIR related to the NDPS Act (FIR No. 55/2024, Sections 8/20).
Police clarified that Sajad was lawfully arrested in the case. However, Fayaz exploited the situation by pretending to have the power to secure his release, thereby defrauding Showkat of the amount.
Acting on the complaint, Police Station Nowhatta registered a case under FIR No. 01/2025 (Section 318 of the BNS Act) and initiated an investigation. The police successfully recovered the entire amount from Fayaz during the probe.
Further investigation into the matter is ongoing. (With inputs from GNS)
