Renowned cricketer turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu was released on Saturday after ten months of detention after being convicted by a court over the death of 65-year-old Gurnam Singh in a road rage case in 1988.
Sidhu was welcomed by hundreds of supporters who chanted slogans to welcome the Congress leader outside Patiala’s central jail.
Outside the jail, the congress leader addressing the supporters said, In his speech, he said, the Bhartiya Janta Party wants to bring president’s rule in Punjab. “Wherever the minorities are ruling and are in majority, the BJP is conspiring to bring the central rule into those states,” Sidhu said.
He said that there is no democracy left in the country. Praising the congress leader Rahul Gandhi, he said, “Whenever a dictatorship came to this country a revolution has also come and this time, the name of that revolution is Rahul Gandhi. He will rattle the government.”
As per PTI, Sidhu’s release was happening earlier due to his good conduct during imprisonment, as allowed under the rules.
Navjot Singh Sidhu’s family had got an intimation from authorities regarding his release from the Patiala jail, his lawyer HPS Varma said on Friday. He had also remained in jail for three days in 2007 in the same case. With this, he was eligible for release on April 1, said the lawyer.
