The Court of First Instance in Qatar has issued a death penalty verdict for eight former naval officers who were detained in Doha on charges of espionage, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The MEA expressed its profound shock at the verdict and is now awaiting the full judgment, reported ANI.
In an official press release, the MEA stated, “We have received preliminary information that the Court of First Instance in Qatar has delivered a verdict today in the case involving eight Indian employees of Al Dahra company. We are deeply dismayed by the death penalty verdict and are eagerly awaiting the detailed judgment. We are in contact with the family members and legal counsel and are exploring all available legal options.”
The MEA emphasized the significance of this case, affirming that they have closely monitored it, and they will continue to provide consular and legal support. They also intend to raise the matter with Qatari authorities.
Due to the confidential nature of the case proceedings, the MEA refrained from making further comments at this time.
These eight Indian nationals have been detained in Qatar since October 2022 and were accused of allegedly spying on a submarine program.
New Delhi had gained consular access to them and had been actively working towards securing their release.
The first trial for the Indian nationals took place in late March.
Meetu Bhargava, the sister of one of the detained officers living in Gwalior, appealed to the Indian government for assistance in bringing her brother back.
On June 8, she made a heartfelt plea to Prime Minister Narendra Modi via a post on a social platform.
“These former Navy officers are a source of national pride. Once again, I earnestly request our Hon’ble Prime Minister to expedite their immediate return to India without any further delay. Please intervene. @narendramodi @AmitShah @rajnathsingh @MOS_MEA,” she posted.
