Dame Sarah Gilbert- the inventor of the Covishield vaccine has warned against the new wave and said it can be lethal than the previous one.
Delivering a lecture at the 44th Richard Dimbleby, Prof Dame Sarah Gilbert, who invented `Covishield’ said, “This will not be the last time a virus threatens our lives and our livelihoods. “The truth is, the next one could be worse. It could be more contagious, or more lethal, or both. We cannot allow a situation where we have gone through all we have gone through, and then find that the enormous economic losses we have sustained mean that there is still no funding for pandemic preparedness.”
The Oxford professor is credited with saving millions of lives through her role in designing the coronavirus vaccine.
On the Omicron variant, Prof Gilbert said the spike protein of this variant contains mutations already known to increase the transmissibility of the virus.
