Days after 1,200 kilograms of decomposed meat were recovered from a cold storage unit in Srinagar, another 350 kilograms of rotten and unregulated meat were seized and destroyed in Pulwama district.
The meat was recovered near the Pampore Highway and later disposed of safely in the Lelhara area of Kakapora in a joint operation by the Kakapora Police and officials from the Food Safety Department.
“During routine checking, we intercepted the vehicle carrying the meat. It had no proper documentation or cold chain, and the condition of the meat raised serious concerns,” said a Food Safety officer involved in the operation.
Officials said the seized stock was unfit for human consumption and posed a grave public health risk.
An official from Kakapora added, “We acted promptly to ensure the meat was destroyed in a safe manner. An investigation has been launched to trace the source and those behind the supply.”
The seizure comes in the wake of a larger haul in Srinagar on August 1, where 1,200 kilograms of decomposed meat were found at a cold storage facility in Zakura.
The back-to-back incidents have raised serious concerns about the meat supply chain and storage standards in the Valley.
Authorities have appealed to the public to stay alert and report any suspicious or unhygienic food-related activities.
A toll-free helpline (104) has also been made available for
such complaints.
