As the campaign for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections concluded, Congress took a sharp jab at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of failing to restore full statehood to the region, Press Trust of India reported.
The party warned that Modi will face a defeat “far greater” than the one on June 4 during the Lok Sabha elections.
The campaign, which ended on Sunday evening, saw intense exchanges between the BJP, Congress, National Conference (NC), and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on key issues such as Article 370, Pakistan, terrorism, and reservation policies.
The final phase of voting, covering 40 assembly segments in Jammu and north Kashmir, will take place on October 1.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a post on X, criticized Modi for not taking responsibility for the decision to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood in 2019.
He highlighted that despite the Prime Minister’s claim that only the BJP could restore statehood, he had evaded accountability on the matter, failing to address it in Parliament or during his visits to the region.
Ramesh further emphasized that Modi had not conducted any interviews in Jammu and Kashmir during the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign, despite holding many across other regions of India.
He concluded by predicting that the Prime Minister would face a significant defeat in the upcoming election.
This is the first assembly election in Jammu Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370, with results expected on October 8.
