The Delhi High Court has issued a directive to Tihar Jail officials to submit an immediate medical report on Yasin Malik, a Kashmiri separatist leader convicted under anti-terror laws, as he seeks urgent treatment for cardiac and kidney conditions.
Malik’s counsel informed the court that he has been on a hunger strike since November 1, protesting alleged delays and inadequate medical attention from prison authorities.
The High Court’s notice, issued by Justice Anoop Kumar Mendiratta, also mandates the Tihar Jail superintendent to ensure that Malik receives appropriate medical care in line with the Delhi Prison Rules, 2018.
Malik, who leads the banned Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) and is serving a life sentence, had previously petitioned the court earlier this year for similar concerns, which were addressed with assurances of medical support from the Central government.
In his latest plea, Malik claims he suffers from bilateral kidney stones and other serious health conditions, warning that delayed care could lead to life-threatening complications.
He has requested a transfer to a super-specialty hospital, preferably the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) or another qualified facility, citing escalating health risks.
Additionally, Malik contends that jail authorities have restricted his access to court appearances and hospital visits under a December 2023 order, invoking Section 268 of the Code of Criminal Procedure to prevent his physical transfer from prison.
He has urged the High Court to lift these restrictions to allow him necessary medical and court access.
Representing Malik were advocates Irshad Harif, M Asad Beig, and Khalid Azeer.
