Delhi University principal sparks row after applying cow dung to classroom walls

A video showing Dr. Pratyush Vatsala, Principal of Laxmibai College under Delhi University, applying cow dung to classroom walls has sparked widespread criticism from students, faculty, and netizens.

The footage, which has gone viral on social media, shows Vatsala coating the walls with cow dung inside a classroom, assisted by college staff. In response to the controversy, she defended her actions as part of a research initiative titled “Study of Heat Stress Control by Using Traditional Indian Knowledge.”

Speaking to PTI, Vatsala stated, “The research is ongoing and being conducted in porta cabins. Full details will be available in a week. I personally applied the coating. There’s no harm in touching natural mud. Some people are spreading misinformation without understanding the context.”

The project reportedly explores traditional Indian methods of climate regulation. Cow dung is believed in some circles to have natural cooling and antibacterial properties. In an internal college group, Vatsala had informed faculty that classrooms in C Block would soon receive a “new look” to improve comfort during lectures.

Despite her explanation, the initiative has drawn sharp criticism. Many questioned why traditional methods were being prioritized over providing basic infrastructure like fans or air conditioners, especially when administrative offices are already well-equipped. Some critics have also suggested that the move may have political undertones.

Laxmibai College, established in 1965 and located in Ashok Vihar, is a constituent college of Delhi University and functions under the Delhi government. The incident has reignited the debate over the role of traditional knowledge systems in modern educational spaces, and the infrastructural neglect faced by many public institutions.
