‘Easing passport restrictions, free water and low cost electricity’: NC releases mandate ahead of assembly polls

Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) released its manifesto on Monday, promising sweeping reforms and relief measures across various sectors, including electricity, water, employment, and social welfare.

The manifesto was unveiled in Srinagar ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, setting the stage for a comprehensive development plan for the region.

A significant highlight of the manifesto is the promise to alleviate the ongoing electricity and water crises in the region. The JKNC has pledged to provide 200 units of electricity free to all households.

Additionally, the party aims to transfer hydro power projects to Jammu and Kashmir, as recommended by the Prime Minister’s Committee, to ensure local control over energy resources.

In an effort to address long-standing issues of unpaid electricity bills, the manifesto outlines a one-time settlement plan for pending arrears in both rural and urban areas. Industries are also promised relief, with the party exploring feasible ways to reduce power tariffs, thereby fostering a more favorable environment for industrial growth.

On the water front, the JKNC has committed to providing free drinking water to every household, with a particular focus on far-flung and inaccessible areas.

The party has also vowed to ensure proper utilization of funds under the Jal Jivan Mission, pledging to plug any loopholes that have been exploited in recent years.

Additionally, steps will be taken to increase the free power ratio from the current 10 percent to 40 percent, significantly augmenting the domestic power supply.

The manifesto also outlines several guarantees aimed at addressing social issues and ensuring the well-being of the region’s residents. These include the repeal of the Public Safety Act (PSA), the release of political prisoners, and a commitment to the dignified return of Kashmiri Pandits.

The JKNC has also promised to ease passport verification processes, put an end to unjust terminations, and stop unnecessary harassment of people on highways.

The party has placed a strong emphasis on youth employment, promising to provide one lakh jobs to the region’s youth.

Within the first three months of forming the government, the JKNC plans to pass the Jammu and Kashmir Youth Employment Generation Act, which will focus on creating sustainable employment opportunities.

The manifesto also promises to fill all vacancies in government departments within 180 days and to make job applications free for all examinations.

The party also plans to promote employment in the energy sector through government facilitation and incentive-linked projects, including mini hydropower and solar power initiatives.

Other key promises include providing six free LPG cylinders to economically weaker sections (EWS), free public transport for women, enhancing marriage assistance, and increasing the medical allowance of pensioners from ₹300 to ₹1000.

The manifesto also promises the establishment of a Minority Commission and the strengthening of the Public Distribution System (PDS).

With these ambitious plans, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference aims to address the critical needs of the region and pave the way for a more prosperous and inclusive future for its residents.
