Several families in Jalal Mohalla, Old Town Baramulla, have been left homeless after a massive fire broke out on Monday evening, reducing at least seven residential houses to ashes.
Speaking to The Kashmiriyat, the affected families have urged the government for immediate assistance as they grapple with the loss of their homes just days before Eid.
“We were making plans for Eid, buying essentials for the celebrations, but now we have no home left,” said a resident, Remembering the fire incident, he said, “Everything is gone in a matter of minutes.”
The fire, which broke out in the densely populated locality, spread rapidly, engulfing multiple structures before Fire and Emergency Services, assisted by residents, managed to bring it under control. “Fire tenders, with the active help of locals, launched a joint operation to douse the flames and prevent further destruction,” an official said.
Despite efforts, the fire caused extensive damage, leaving many families without shelter. Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire.
Meanwhile, locals have called on the government to provide immediate relief, including temporary accommodation, financial aid, and essential supplies for the affected families. “We have nowhere to go. We appeal to the government to help us in this time of crisis,” another resident said, urging officials to step in before Eid.
